Blade Runner Day 8, Gaff

Now I really don't have much to say since I posted like 30 minutes ago. So heres some stuff.

I drew Gaff. The only Puerto Rican Blade Runner or person in the future. Because Puerto Rican's don't exist there. Ink and white paint in my sketch book. He's one of the coolest and he looks dangerous.

The other reason I was late was because I went on a date last night. After dinner, a movie, and some drinks, I tried something smooth and was a little let down when I got a kiss on the cheek for it. It was a spur of the moment artistic thing that really deserved some lippage. I'm only smooth like 3 times a year, give me a break. I'm not even going to repeat the move because it was so good I don't want someone to steal it. Oh well. 'Nother one doesn't like me. Who would have guessed. Me would have guessed, that's who!

What am I doing dating 21 year olds anyway. I guess I do it because they're tasty.

Just to show you I have no hard feelings here's another of Doctor Steve Brule's Brule's Rules.

Blade Runner Day 7 1/2, Deckard Sky

Yeah I know I'm a day late. That's why it says 1/2 up there. I took my time on this one. I wet the whole thing, painted it, and then painted it again, and then again, and then with white paint. Not as spectacular as it all sounds and the scan sapped all the color out of it. I need a new scanner. Maybe it was the photoshop save for web thing that sapped it. It looks better in real life.

I was trying for those scenes when he is in the spinner and the dirty sky is reflecting in the lights on his face. Or when he is up against all that neon. One of those things anyway.

The Beaver Boys recently had to go to the hospital because their shrimp and white wine levels were not correct. Here's hoping them the best and I hope they recover soon.

Blade Runner Day 6, Blade Runners

Don't have much to say because my life isn't currently in shambles.

This is actually the rough for a painting I'm working on. I may end up liking this more. Ink and white paint in my sketchbook. It's supposed to be Deckard and Gaff getting out of a spinner ready to shoots some damned replicants. This never happened in the movie but it would be cool.

Here's another reason I love Doctor Steve Brule. I strictly follow all of Brules Rules.

Blade Runner Day 5, The Kiss, Pris

This first piece is by my friend and fellow director Taylor Wansley. He lit my movie. His own movie is the best no budget movie I've ever seen. And we crossed the country together in a station wagon. He did this on a Wacom tablet on his Mac. I think he used photoshop to paint it. I really need to take this up. I barely use my Wacom now a days. This is the moment that Deckard slams Rachel against the shades and kisses her. It's hot and weird and awesome. My favorite thing, and something I've personally struggled with so many times in the past are the light beams through the slats. How they fall on Deckard's face and especially how they reflect in Rachel's hair is amazing. I don't think I've ever gotten that effect right.

I get jealous of Taylor for how good he is. The guy doesn't draw for months to years and then just pops out a masterpiece. He is left handed and all the left handed artists I've met were naturals. I took years of study on an almost daily basis and he just sits down and does it. He gets what he wants while I search for a finished stage.

I drew Pris. This is not my favorite but it may be a case of still being down because it looked much worse for the first 90% of it. I polished a turd. Now it's nice and shiny, but I still see the turd underneath whether it is there or not. I didn't plan on inking it at all but it needed it badly. But I didn't want to put my favorites up against one of my friends. So he gets best in show today.

Now I got to get Mendoza to do a Blade Runner Day sketch.

Blade Runner Day 4, Rachel

I just finished this painting and feel it was a failure. Although looking at it from a distance makes me like it. Yeah, she's smiling. I wanted Rachel to smile for once. Sue me. I drew it in pencil and painted it in watercolor. This measure like 5X7 inches. About that much. It is pretty small.

I still have like seven half finished Blade Runner pieces. Hopefully I can finish them in time to post everyday. I'll still post 25 no matter what. I decided to make a new painting instead of posting what I had because I was going to post a small one with a special guest's tomorrow.

Is it time to say how much I'm in love with either of the Dechanel sisters. Zooey Deschanel and her sister Emily Deschanel are so cute and hot it tickles. They are shiny like crystal(old post inside joke). Plus they are sure to never go out with Lees(at least in real life).

I got a laugh from an MSN headline, "Has Yeti Returned To Mount Everest". The funny part is how it takes for granted whether a Yeti exists or not. I wish I lived my life like that.

Was drinking white wine while watching the Beaver Boys. Of course that is appropriate since their favorite things is shrimp and white wine. My favorite dance moves of theirs are Corwin's Crouch and Pestel Press. I do regret not having shrimp while watching though. Also Doctor Steve Brule's Last Resort Fighting technique is probably the best Doctor Steve Brule episode ever.

Blade Runner Day 3, Deckard

I watched Blade Runner : The Final Cut the other night. I guess I don't really have too much to say about it. I loved it. I finally felt that the unicorn sequence worked. The new shots were great. Zhora running through that glass in the old version was the only thing I disliked about the movie and they fixed it so I was very happy. Also the dove going up into the blue sky I always kind of liked but it didn't look like it was in the same place and they fixed it with a whole new background. They added a scene with strippers in hockey masks which seems to foreshadow horror for the next two decades.

It was very nice to see Harrison Ford on the big screen looking and acting as cool as he used to. And Rutger Hauer is just a god in the movie. He is a force of nature. His moods changing on a beat. You can see why he is the leader of the replicants. He is just magnetic. In a side note I recently showed my friend Taylor that he wasn't just a one hit wonder. In the Hitcher he is so fucking scary and weird. I think I was kind of going for that in my own movie with the villain. Plus another of my favorite movies Flesh And Blood he pretty much thoroughly defiles Jennifer Jason Leigh(thus the movie helped get me through puberty) while being a mercenary during the middle ages and the bubonic plague.

And god, Rachel on the big screen is like the best thing that ever happened to me. Okay, I got a goth fetish(and people who know me, know I really go crazy about goth girls who look like Rachel). She looks like a statue. Like her skin is too perfect to be real.

My only complaint, and it's a weird one coming from me are the somewhat repeated FX shots. Before people started doing science fiction movies a lot those shots were a precious commodity. Now we see cool future cities everyday. So showing the exact same shot is over kill. Again, I stress that this applies to 2007. Not 1992 when they added the extra city scenes. Once or even twice is fine. Three or four is a little much. Of course my problem might just stem from watching the movie several times a year for the last 25 years.

This is my favorite Blade Runner piece I've done. I drew it at 24 hour Starbucks(which is no longer 24 hours) a few weeks ago. I inked it over the weeks and painted it while Taylor wrote his screenplay. I know there really isn't any resemblance to Harrison Ford but I didn't have any access to pictures at the time and I feel it gets the point across. I may possible paint some highlights in the hair because it seems a little detailess the way it currently is. I actually did this one fairly fast. Just over a long period of time. I really like it and it is probably the best thing I've drawn on tinted paper so far.

I also have to mention my framed Final Cut poster I got for free at San Diego Comicon. I saw Ridley Scott, Syd Mead, Rachel, Zhora, Tyrell(who I really though was dead so I was very pleasantly surprised) and James Hong among others. James Hong was so fucking funny it was incredible. Ridley Scott was the opposite. Dead serious. He is one of my all time favorite directors(either number two or three after Scorcese). And he is so awesome I have no idea how he can be so dark. Anyway, awesome.

I guess I had more to say about it than I thought.

Blade Runner Day 2, Eyes Like Animals

I drew this one because I wanted to specifically draw the moment where Deckard eyes reflect light like the rest of the replicants(although I can't remember where Zhora and Leon's eyes reflect, the rest of them do). I got a two for one on this because Rachel's are also reflecting in that scene. The only thing I regret about this is the fact that I had a really hard time trying to show how Deckard is blurred in the background while Rachel's face is in clear focus. I think I could have done it better.

One thing of note in this picture is that I think I did this more than 2 years ago. I remember showing this batshit insane girl I was trying to date at the time. She was really good looking but she was so crazy that I was just the first of several people who swore never to talk to her again. And that was december of 2005. I remember writing that screenplay(the one I quoted from a few posts down) a few days after I made the decision to not have anything to do with her. The point of all this is I think it predates when I started using my drybrush technique regularly. So it has a completely anal line style that I no longer do. I think I was using crowquill pens on everything except for the blocks of black.

I obviously love the movie if I had this laying around for no reason two years ago.

I'll have a review of the Final Cut tomorrow. I saw it last night but I want it to have it's own post.

Blade Runner Day 1, Fluorescent Silhouettes

I know it was released yesterday. I just decided to start this event on the 1st. The event? 25 Blade Runner posts for December. The most we(Mendoza and I) have ever posted. Maybe I can pull it off. Maybe not. We'll see. I'm sure I'll miss a day for some reason or other. But I'll try not to. Whatever happens, shitty picture or good I want to do 25(like my cut off age for girls I date. I kid, I kid....even though it generally is true. I was interested in that Cougar last week so give me a break).

This is all to celebrate the 25th anniversary of my favorite movie ever, Blade Runner. I could explain a million reasons why I love it(and I have gone off about it plenty of times before now), but I felt that just drawing it would do more to show my feelings than anything else.

I drew this about two weeks ago as an experiment in putting down water color over pencils and then inking and putting down white paint. I drew a much better, tighter picture but as I put the paint down the lines disappeared along with the subtlety and beauty. It still has a nice feel. Just, it seems to be kind of clumsy. Blur your eyes it might look better. The lower one is what it looked like about half way through. I obviously didn't use any reference, which really hurts the piece. My other pieces at least use a little reference. Some are even frames from the movie(although in a style that adds instead of just copies, I hope). So lets see how this goes.

Last girl I tried to date was 21. The girl before that was 25. I really have to catch up to my own age, but I was going the wrong direction. I'm still supposed to take the 21 year old out. She's fun. And I think there are sparks. But I could be wrong. I was kind of a dick. I turned her down when she called me back to hang out after initially canceling. I at least have to make up for that. I've had a lot of people do that to me so I was stand offish, not in what I said, but in my own head, and by canceling when she wanted to hang out the same night. She deserves better than that.

Eating Holiday

Don't overdo it like this guy and have some self-respect. Eating disorder...blah blah....addiction...blah...blah...it's in my genes...blahblah.blah blah blah...i'm trying...not my fault...it's the holidays...blah.blah...

Get outside and walk [a lot] if you're going to eat 2 pounds of turkey.

But my knees hurt...

Well, because you're fucking obese. At least try and do something about it, and don't eat half of that pie! Put it down.

I'm hungry, so Happy Thanksgiving.

Monster, Monster

Yet another sketch that I have to finish later thanks to work.
I started drawing this yesterday in my car before going into the "office." Actually, I only had the head and one arm done, so I had to work on it today.
Is Rivero doing okay after that one post? It sounded like he was recovering fine, but he might be carrying his flask around the house more often.
My brother also mentioned a new "Cloverfield" trailer online, so I checked it out before lunch today. Looks pretty cool. Monster overload? Just like the zombie thing?? I'd love to see some monster comics, and hopefully Paul Pope is working hard on Batting Boy which I think has monsters pitted against, yes, a boy.
I still need to work on all those characters Rivero asked me to draw... C'mon, Thanksgiving vacation days. Hurry up, and give me time to work on this stuff.

Sketch from a couple of months ago

I was digging through my closet, looking at what drawing paper was hiding inside when I found my big AquaBee sketchbook. I remember painting this not too long ago, and it may have been the time that Rivero and I were going to the 24H Starbucks that is no longer open 24 hours.

This was done in watercolor and maybe some gouache. Sometimes you see something on tv or in magazines, and it can help with character designs.

Some digital hatching was added a few minutes ago to bring out some of the form that wasn't quite finished with traditional media. It's still unfinished, but most of the stuff I put on this blog is admittedly. I'll try to complete some of these sketches tonight since I got out of work early.

Didn't realize that we had posted 17 times in August; it must have been all the energy we had before Comic-Con. I don't know why I have it in my head that we have to post a lot this month. It must be my guilt for making Rivero post so many times without me contributing anything.

-cm

Number 160

I looked at the Drawing Board Drawing Jam and worked on the latest thread like Rivero. Looks like we both picked the first picture, but I also want to work on the second pose. Working too slowly for the first pass I decided to put a tone over the whole drawing with graphite just so I could find some kind of focus in the drawing. In the end, I came to the realization that I need to go to some figure drawing classes again just to loosen up. Doing some gestures and just working bigger would feel much better than working in front of this computer screen with a drawing pad on my lap.

Here's a more finished version of the drawing, but I still wanted to do some work digitally to bring out certain parts, especially the background the parts of the face, hands, and feet.

No time right now...have to get ready for work.

I'll try to get Rivero to go to a figure drawing session somewhere here in the Bay Area, but getting him to wake up before noon might prove harder than watching a Michael Bay movie.

The title of this posts refers to this being our blog's 160th post. Looks like November will be our best month so far in terms posting more often.

-cm

update: Here's my last attempt at this one before I move on to other drawings tonight. I used some transfer paper to get the figure onto some bristol board with a little tooth, and then I tried to render it as cleanly as I could. It would be nice to get away from this kind of line quality...something with a little more life. Paul Pope is so great at creating these energetic drawings that make me remember why I like ink drawings and ones where the pencil creates something that can't be found in so many [comic] artists today.

Will have to post this one on the Drawing Board before I sleep.

Unfortunately, I have no stories to tell other than I got out of work early, decided to come home and draw, and... I'd better find a way to make a living out of doing this soon... sigh... I need to start working on storytelling and comics again.

More Iron Fist

I did this one in pencil a few times and ending up transferring pencils to some bristol even though I wasn't completely happy with the anatomy and the way I was rounding out the form. It was brought into Photoshop and will hopefully be transformed into a fully painted piece. I've run out of time because I have to leave for work soon.

I'll have to post this one and the previous Iron Fist sketch on the Drawing Board just because Rivero asked so politely the other day.

I really have to brush up on anatomy and foreshortening. There are still no backgrounds in this pin-up, and that sucks. Still putting stuff off like I was still in college, and that sucks even more.

I was supposed to make some time for American Gangster this weekend, too, but that didn't happen.

Cormac/Coens = Old Men

I saw No Country For Old Men last night. It may have been one of the best movies I have ever seen. Sometimes you just know. In the last few years when I saw a movie like City Of God or Old Boy I walked out knowing I had never seen anything like them. That these would go down in history. You know when you have experienced something truly new. One of the tensest movies I've ever seen. With perhaps the most realistic violence. Perfect sound. When someone shot at someone else it had this perfect distance, percussion, and eventual deep hit in either glass, wood, concrete, metal, or flesh. There was nothing clean and perfect about anything in the movie. I love the Coen brothers, but this is in my mind their best movie. Everything they had promised with Blood Simple and Millers Crossing comes to life here. Plus as a fan of Cormac McCarthy I was amazed that someone could adapt something of his to such a level of perfection. This was maybe the best adaptation of a book that I have ever read. I've noticed some reviewers totally missing the point of the movie(and book). It's about the meaningless of violence. Therefore meaningless violence occurs with no moral or outcome meant to satisfy. This is very important to understand. Dying happens. It has no meaning or worth. It's a nihilistic, existentialist point of view(something that was very prevalent in the other two more violent and dark books I have read by McCarthy). This isn't about making the viewer or reader happy about outcomes of conflicts. This is about real life and how unhappy and unfulfilling true violence is. I think the last scenes make this all too clear yet I have read people who either didn't listen or see the scenes in the context.

Everyone is great in this movie. Josh Brolin is perfect, I know that Tommy Lee Jones has been waiting to play this particular part for decades(he's optioned a book or two in the past by McCarthy and made his own movie that closely parallels this one). Woody Harelson is great and in his own film catalogue this serves as a sharp answer to Natural Born Killers. But it is Javier Bardem that is something else. Oscar worthy and any other year that Daniel Day Lewis didn't embody acting he would be the obvious choice for best actor.

This is a movie only an experienced film maker could make. You would have to have about ten or more movies under your belt to have this level of patience and the daring to basically piss off your audience(which this does). But if you listen it's all there. Everything you need to know. Or don't need to know. And that is what makes it a Cormac McCarthy story.

The last scene is devastating. And perfect like few others.

If you don't like films that don't explain things and have a philosophical bent more important than plotting, morals, and outcomes then really don't watch this. It is not an action movie. It is the antithesis of one.

Ouroborous

Snake Eating It's Own Tail

I had one of those Joe Matt Peepshow moments today when I got an e-mail from a woman I mentioned liking a few times in these posts. We were e-mailing back and forth about stuff and finally she mentioned seeing the picture I painted of her(which I already knew she knew about) and reading the post attached to it where I go into detail about an embarrassing story about hitting on her. She said she was flattered and had no idea. She said she felt famous since people read this thing. I felt famous that someone I only kind of knew read about me liking her on a website. We don't get that many hits but it was a nice feeling never the less. (BTW, the Joe Matt reference is to this one issue where he wrote a similar thing to my story, later became friends with the woman and then she read the previous issue and it all went down the drain in a later issue... if any of that made any sense).

I like another right now(although I am not putting out my flame for you if you are reading this honey). I won't write about her. At least not until it goes all wrong(or the snowball chance in hell it goes right).

Drew this with White paint, Black ink, Colored Pencil on green paper. When I scanned it the color was way more real and brilliant. When I "copied it for the web" it deadened the color for some reason.

The How To Draw Noir book by Shawn Martinbrough is rad. Check it out.

I just woke up at 8pm and I don't feel Smarter Than A Fifth Grader or Jeff Foxworthy. So I'm changing the channel on this shit.

My cat is weaving between my legs and the chair legs like a shark being fed chum from a pier.

Ready To Pass Out

I can't live normal hours. I'm a fucking wimp. I've been nodding off since 8 fucking PM. What is that? I drew this at work(I'm filling in for a worker at my old job at a country club). I did a bunch of these so I am happy. Just not all there.

This was done in about an hour or less on cardboard paper with ink, white paint, and colored pencil.

I saw There WIll Be Blood by Paul Thomas Anderson and have a glowing review that will sound super mixed. But I loved it. Here it is as I wrote about it in an e-mail to Mendoza(who by the way insisted I post like five times today just because I have five drawings).

I went to see the premiere of There Will Be Blood by Paul Thomas Anderson(Boogie Nights). It is an epic like what hasn't been done in several decades. It stars Daniel Day Lewis, and he is sure to at the very least be nominated for an academy award. The only thing is, it is not like a story you see in a movie. It is like an experiance. Basically what it was like to drill for oil in the turn of the century in the desert. Incredibly long and what would be boring to most people. It is more like a historical artifact. I found it fascinating and unpredictable. But slow and long(which to me isn't bad but seriously this movie will and maybe should turn off about 90% or more of an audience). I loved it, it was an achievement in film making and something you are only going to get like once a decade. It was cruel harsh and unforgiving like the subject matter. And I can't recommend it to anyone. IF you like history like so much you want to see what it is exactly like, even the unpleasant monotony of it, then watch this. If you are looking for a story, there is one, but it takes three hours, not two, and not even barely scratches the surface in the first hour.

That was what I wrote to Mendoza. Now you know how impersonal I am in real life and how I do not like human contact and will die alone. I need to sleep and it's only 9:12. I actually got up from bed to post this shit. I feel sick. Idiot. Whatever.

Another PS sketch

Here's one of those super hero sketches I mentioned in the last post. Maybe I'll repeat some of them until I'm satisfied with the results.

I'll get to more complete compositions as I draw more characters. It's been so long since I've worked on perspective and backgrounds and having the figures feel grounded in that space. Rivero had all those Hydra guys going crazy or getting punched in their faces. Maybe after I reread the first story arc of the new Iron First series I'll get a better sense of K'un-Lun and the other environments. Plus, it's just hard drawing backgrounds in the computer, so I'll have to go back to pencil and paper and just do the coloring in PS. Those other characters in the tournament looked pretty awesome, too.

Sometimes it feels like I'm just typing more stuff here to avoid empty space next to the images that we post. I could mention some eight-year-old in China running 2,000+ miles. I swear I read that somewhere and now I can't find the article. You're just going to have to believe me.

-cm

More than one post a day?

This is the first time I've drawn anything in a long time, so there was a decent layer of dust on the Wacom tablet. I'm not going to make any promises for more posts this month, but I'm going to try.

There was a lot of good imagery in I Am Legend which I borrowed from the library. Enjoyed most if not all of the stories, and I was definitely creeped out some nights because I'd read it before going to sleep. Don't really read horror novels.

My brain is starting to shut down because it's already 2:55am. Was sure that I had something interesting to write this time around. I'll leave the weekend stuff to Rivero. I will say that seeing Serenity at Piedmont Theater in Oakland was so worth the eight bucks last Friday. I had been forgetting to borrow the dvd from my brother. .... I'm just going to stop writing this....

The digital sketch was done in Photoshop CS. No character in particular. I told Rivero that I wanted to draw 100 super heroes from comics, so that should keep me busy for a while. I'll try to do as many as I can for Graphic Apparatus before this month is over. The first ones will probably be:
  1. Iron Fist
  2. Spider-man
  3. Batman
  4. Jesse Custer
  5. Zatanna
All right...can't concentrate anymore...too late...zzz

I had some tea at some place in Piedmont the other day. Licee. No. Lackee. Leekee. The name of the tea was something like that. It had those scary balls at the bottom that look like rat eyeballs or large fish eggs. Whatever the case it was excellent. I even ended up liking those insect eggs or whatever the fuck those things are.

I drew this picture of some dude sitting like a foot and a half to the side of me. Luckily he left so I didn't have to explain how I stole his soul and put it on paper. Remember this is a tea place. A few miles from Berkeley. They'll think shit like that. Anyway it was done with acrylic ink, ink, and white charcoal pencil on gray tinted paper.

The other night I hit on a beer wench(that's what she called herself, I told her never to let anyone call her a wench). Mendoza was convinced I'd chicken out since she was the cutest there. The singer of a band I was watching cracked his head open. My friend Taylor said he heard Mendoza on a video tape later say, "Come on keep playing, it's just a little blood, thats what we came for". Mendoza is so evil sometimes I think we must bow to him. I drank 151 proof. That was pretty much my halloween in Berkeley.

Of Mud Sharks and Zeppelins

The title is a reference to a crazy story that supposedly happened involving some famous people, a big fish, and a groupie. On drawing Jam over at the Drawing Board:
(not work safe)
http://www.drawingboard.org/viewtopic.php?p=654125#654125
The picture is all right. Once you do something on this kind of paper it's really hard to fix it. The face didn't capture the the girls face and I drew the whole thing while watching Hostel 2. Acrylic paint and white charcoal on cardboard paper(just brown construction paper). My next one is way better. This girl is laying in mud, hence part of the name.

I'll get into Hostel 2 later. The main girl is Fantasticus. In other news, Mary Elizabeth Winstead is not going to be Wonder Woman. Cobie Smulders(one of the better names on the planet earth) isn't either. Why do I care? Because I have a vested interest in any girl who looks like Wonder Woman or is smoking hot(or in the case of Cobie, smuldering hot...sorry).

I have to get my Blade Runner paintings ready for the DVD coming out. It's my all time favorite movie.

Maybe this is lame, but I went and saw a Weezer cover band that was actually note perfect. That was after the Cure cover band who was pretty good. And a wierd Duran Duran cover band. It was fun. I'm a sucker for cute girls in costumes(thank you, kittens of SF, Dorothy from Kansas, Qouthe Keon:"I'm never seen a Dorothy who wasn't hot" ). Good sushi boat food. Clement street, SF.

Iron Fist/Book Reviews/Mac

Mendoza requested I draw Iron fist and I did. I think it is a good drawing, although it is weak in several respects. I obviously tried to cover up some weaknesses in effects and details. But, at a visceral level I like it a lot. I'm thinking of painting the original sketch I drew in my sketch book. It's a little different and maybe it can give me the chance to draw a simpler more powerful design. I have a Vampirella sketch fully pencilled and ready to be inked.

My days have been increasingly dull and uneventful. The ladies have all but disappeared from my life. Tv is actually getting boring for me(I find good stuff, ask anyone). The books have been all right.

Marcelo Frusin drew an amazingly cool annual of Wolverine that he colored himself. It is stunning with an original, yet realistic pallette. J.H. Williams(who I still need some original art from) drew three issues of Batman that were the best that comic has seen in decades(aside from the wonderful Batman Black And White series). Tomm Coker finally came back and drew an issue of the Ride that kicked ass and has an issue of Moon Knight coming out that is rad. After the Western he did a while back this is a good year for him. So comics have been good this last half a year.

I finished Steven King's the Dark Tower. The first four books were inspired madness. The last three, even when they got violent were okay at best, and sometimes flat out filler(the violence was the only thing keeping me awake because the plot was useless). In the last few pages he makes a good point that the end of the story isn't the important part. It's getting there. The journey. Unfortunately he fucked that up. And luckily the last twoo closing chapters were great. Otherwise all that made up languige stuff was super irritating.

Reading Last Call by Tim Powers right now. It is fucking great so far. It's like a magical realism take on poker playing useing tarot cards(he even made up really cool way of playing called Assumption). And people are embodiments of ancient gods and figures. Bugsy Siegel is the Fisher King. Another dude is the Green Knight. Not literally, just in a sense. And all kinds of things can be divined by poker, cards, tarot cards, astrology, luck, and chaos physics. It's really cool and crazy and smart. Like a comprehensible Gravities Rainbow. I read it because I thought tarot cards were cool as clues to very old archetypes and meanings that have lasted for centuries(I'm not into them for all the mystical crystal bullshit new spirituality). I always thought that Joseph Campbell(scholar on achetypes and myths) really missed something by skipping the meaning of the cards and why they have lasted so long(hell I can see parallels to even Star Wars in cards[the Old Man, the Magician, the Fool, The Knights]).

Also read The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester. One of the coolest main characters I've read in a while who only wants one thing: Revenge. He lives in future where people can teleport by will so prisons are underground and in the dark. He has this huge tattoo on his face that makes him look like a tiger. One character is so irradiated that no one can be in a room with him for more than five minutes. And the novel has a Dues Ex Machina that actually is good. Excellent and it still holds up after fifty years.

The abduction drama from the BBC and now on HBO called Five Days is very well written. Just when I thinnk its going to be lazy and cliche it goes somewhere completely different and uncharted. Only five episodes. Recommended.

I apparently have an unhealthy obsession with Mac(the make up company) counter girls. My sister has figured it out and uses it as an excuse to make me go there and buy her make up all the time. I'm a sucker for women who know hot to wear make up. I went out with a girl once who all the counter girls just loved(because she was one of their own, a hot semi-goth girl).

The cat is my cat Bean. I did it with Gesso on the black cover of my old sketchbook. I intended to color the eyes but never did. She use to belong to an ex girlfriend but now the cat loves me more than anything else in the world.

A couple of airport sketches

Still haven't kept up with posting here or on my other blog. Haven' even drawn all that much thanks to work, reading, and watching some movies here at home.

These were done in Denver, I think, while we waited for our delayed flight. Relatives told me that there was a bomb scare at Oakland (where I was flying to), but I didn't know that as my cousin drove me to the airport.

The two bald heads that you see here are obviously two different people at the same gate, so I was surprised at how shiny both of them were. I didn't really make that clear with the five minute PS coloring job on these, but believe me, you'd want to have a pair of sunglasses around these two gentlemen. I didn't realize how still some people sit while waiting for their flight while others fidget a lot, and move around like a sugared four year old.

I also noticed that ever since I downloaded the latest driver for my scanner, the shadow in the gutter of the sketchbook is more pronounced. My sketchbooks aren't any thicker, so I don't know why this is happening. If you look at my drawing from inside the plane, a lot of info is actually lost. I'll figure it out when I have the time.

Again with the shiny, bald head. Wouldn't you guys just shave it all off at this point?? I would if I were that bald. I'd look funny, but I'd rather have no hair than have a comb over or something like these two guys.

....I feel like I should have written more to fill up this space here...

...nothing else really...Oh, that podcast called Word Balloon is interesting. There's a lot of time at my job for music and podcasts, so I've heard a few interviews with different comics creators.

Weird Paper

Finished inking a 9 page story for my own anthology. Unfortunately it is not the story I am sending in for approval(it's too weird and sick). I am working on an 11 page story on 14x21 size. My usual size is the standard 10x15, so this may take a while. Although there technically shouldn't be more stuff, it should just look clearer since I am more comfortable drawing big. This is not an excuse to fill the panels with more information although it is hard not to.

I drew this picture in pencil inside of Peet's, but they were closing so Mendoza and I got Pizza. I painted it there. Mendoza was about to pound the guy behind the counter for not knowing what the fuck anchovies were. He was pissed(and I was pretty pissed too because the guy was obviously a rapist) but I soothed Mendoza by explaining the guy was just a harmless idiot(even though his personality dictates he has a beautiful woman waiting for him at home who he treats like shit). The pizza wasn't worth it but I did finish this picture there. Done with pencil, white charcoal, and acrylic ink(which is too thin for this paper which soaks up at least 50% of it. I should have used real acrylic with low viscosity. Oh well, you learn something new everyday. ). I didn't know whether to darken the paper or lighten it to either bring out the highlights or show shadow. It is very confusing just the concept of what to do on this paper. It's called Kraft Pad(or Kraft paper I assume). It isn't a great picture but it is my first on that paper. Next time I'll do better.

I hope to finish the rough cut of my movie this week with the approved music(as in I don't have to pay for the music). After tht I send it to Paul to edit the little things that I may have messed up on(I'm literally talking less than a second cuts that could be trimmed differently and better by an expert at editing). I am the guy who is cutting the scenes into bits and picking which camera shots to go with. I am also pretty relentless when it comes to cutting my own dialogue(which is the great thing about having also written it, I am the only one who can complain about what was cut, in terms of dialogue). Then it gets sent to Doug to fix any audio problems and smooth the parts where the audio wasn't suffiecient or was lacking. Then I get it back and probably end up editing it a little bit more since I'll have had some time away from it. Then it is ready to send to film festivals.

I saw Eastern Promises yesterday and it was fucking great. It was an excellent follow up to A History Of Violence. And Viggo Mortnesen was super great. He didn't do any hollywood leading man bullshit. He was just awesome and you couldn't believe that he would have a fight scene naked. The movie was very original in its conclusion and you have the feeling it came from a book rather than a screenplay because it doesn't have anywhere near the normal ending for a gangster movie.

Saw Wrong Turn 2 and holey shit was that first scene gross and messed up.

Saw Roger Dodger and wonder how everyone in that movie isn't getting paid to do all the best movies. Cambell Scott gave a performance that I would never have seen coming. The kid was great. Jennifer Beals was facinating as an older romantic lead for the kid(in a way). Elizabeth Berkeley was very sweet and did great. Issabella Rosselini is as always great. The plot was excellent and never took the easy way out. The ending was not what I expected and I am glad for that because I thought it almost had to end in a cliche way. It didn't. The direction was perfect. Part voyeuristic but not too much. It made you feel like you were the kid but also made you feel like you were watching something intimate. Big plus, it had the hottest woman ever in the form of the Wonder Woman girl from Serenity and Firefly. Amazing that this is overlooked and these people are not working enough.

That's MY trailer

I shouldn't be so snotty when I say "my". I've come to notice that anybody who says "I" or "my" like they contain two syllables has a serious attitude and are high maintenance. "I-ii am gonna have my-yi baby no matter what my momma says", you hear 14 year old girls on Maury say.

Well right now the trailer below is my baby. Well, actually it's the pacifier. But it's proof my baby exists. Yeah, she'll come to disappoint me and make me feel like I should have been a better parent, but I made her and I finally made some mark on this world. Right now the movie clocks in at an hour and twenty five minutes. It could end up being a few minutes shorter since I cannot stand anything that makes me bored about it. There is a lot of killing, and gross stuff. Plus some weird humor by Doug Clarke(co-creator) and I. I am very proud of some lines I wrote for Paul Gordon's(the villian) character. I created a weird ass guy and Paul basically embodied him. I'm really close to the last edit. Very excited.

I drew Pheonix because she has a cool costume and you know she's hot if Wolverine and Cyclops can both lust after her. I know she'd never sleep with Wolvie though(like in that stupid Ult. X-men story) because once you go Wolvie you never go back.

New Trailer

Adrian will probably write more about this cut of the trailer, but he sent me this new info. The link in the sidebar is updated, too. Enjoy!

Wasn't away that long

The last post I put up was about taking a break from drawing and posting here. My sketchbook went along on my trip to Austin, Tx last Thursday, and I just had to draw in it. That must be a good sign if I can't completely give up sketching. Can I actually make money with the skills that I have? Still not sure especially when there are people out there who can draw circles around me. There are many people out there who can tell stories, compose interesting paintings, and design amazing characters. On the other hand, there are those who just know how to get their stuff out there, land those jobs even if they don't draw or paint that well. They are getting freelance jobs and working from home, not worrying about a day job that sucks the life out of them. No, I'm not jealous of those artists. Good for them. Where does that leave the rest of us? Those who haven't gotten that first job that gets things going? I honestly don't want to think about all that stuff right now. The actual pleasure I get out of drawing with no intention of promoting pieces and getting published is enough for the time being. If someone wants to pay me so I can quit my day jobs, then I'll be more than happy to give it my best. That's enough for now because, like I said, I just want to do what I like.
The ink drawing above was done with a Faber-Castell PITT pen. The guy was either asleep or reading because he didn't move for the longest time; he definitely wasn't dead because he eventually got up.

Here's a pic of the pen set that I picked up a while ago next to this neat key chain that I found in a used game shop in Austin. The store focused on older games and even had old consoles like Atari and Intellivision. I'll link to them as soon as I ask my brother or Jason what the name of that place was. Game Over? I think that was it.

Comic Book Idol

I lost Comic Book Idol. Hell, I didn't even make a runner up. I will
admit I could see where at least 8 of them were better then me. For
real. 8 People without jobs kicked my ass. Different styles, same
styles, whatever. Better. More complete, more professional, and just
all around cleaner. By that I mean that their art is almost perfectly
pencilled. Not messy at all. And one of the runner's up was clearly
the best of all 14 in the running(I wasn't even a runner up, shit) but
he dropped out(and I know I own a comic of his, it may have been Paper
Museum). The only bummer was where I could see how one or two of them
weren't as good as I was in certain ways they should be(if they beat
me out). I think they were picked because of some style preference
of the judges(and I have a very open mind to different styles, I just
don't like derivative without skill).

None of this means I suck. It just points out that no matter how good
I am I need to be great to be a comic book artist. Good doesn't work
anymore. In the 90's they would almost literally hire anyone. The
80's were filled with artists who could barely draw, but they put the
work in and got stuff on time. The 90's boom changed that. The
founders of Image made a company that started out(Image now is
completely different and I'd love to work there, and it is the first
place I would send my stuff to) as style over substance. They started
hiring anyone who could ape their style. Writing didn't matter. You
hired a high school friend for that. It was all about selling comics
to go into a bag and be kept for future generations college fund.
Even as a young teen I knew there was something wrong with that
mentality. And the comics just fucking sucked.

But the point is they hired anyone with a pulse. Then the industry
collapsed. A bunch of losers were left without a job(and some
talented people too who got lost in the shuffle). The amount of jobs
basically were few and far between. There was no room for new people
unless you were absolutely brilliant. And really there are only a few
who are actually that good. Actually great.

People tell me I am a great artist all the time. This is not
bragging, all artists hear this. It is based on how well non artists
draw or who they know. But when you are in the industry and see
people like Moebius, Mike Mignola, Geof Darrow, Adam Hughes, Travis
Charest, and others, you know deep down you have a very long way to
go. I think I am good. But I know I am not great. But getting to
great and the potential of getting there is what fuels me.

All this just points out how futile it is for me to do anything but my
own comics. It's like a secret backdoor into the industry. It's funny because that was my reasoning for making my own movie(And yes the link doesn't work I hope to get it up very in a week). I can
act, write, direct and I'll be a movie maker no matter who takes
issue. In fact since it's finished I basically am. Now I just need
to get it into a theatre. Then I've really arrived(like making my own
comic, and then getting it published).

So I'm not discouraged. I just know I have to up my game. And doing
that will make me great. It may take a year. It may take five. It may take a lifetime. But
it will happen. I don't give up.

I drew these two pages when Steven Grant let out an open call for
talent on his online column(which has excellent political commentary
and dissection of comic storytelling techniques). I pencilled it on
Canson Blueline Comic Book Paper. The paper is pretty good. A little
rough for my taste since I feel my art doesn't really come together
until it is inked. I mainly use Sakura refillable brush pens after
they have lost their pointiness. They last forever as frayed dry
brushes. I used microns for all the perspective stuff. I've been
told it doesn't match too well with my dry brush(which is an excellent
observation) so I may need to modify my storytelling to exclude
details that would need a pen(at least a normal pen, a croqeul pen may
work since in the past I have used ti for tiny parts of dry brush
drawings. I think I need to also not darken or contrast it so much
because it looks better with more watery or translucent ink. I don't
know how Greg Ruth keeps it so dark. I noticed Mark Shultze and Toby
Cypress use a lot of translucent ink(by that I mean watered down to
get a smoother effect, another reason I like plate finish although I
know that they don't use Plate finish). Whatever, now I'm just
rambling.

Vacation Sketches 4

I said everything I want to about Batman. Did this with acrylic ink. This was my first acrylic ink painting. I always used watercolors and guache before. The Cliffhanger post and Green Arrow pic were aslo done in Acrylic ink. It's a lot of fun and much easier for me to use than regular acrylic and maybe even the watercolor mediums.

I'll post some pages tomorrow.

Cliffhanger

So after that two day cliffhanger the answer is: I will keep posting on Graphic Apparatus. I'll try to get others in on it. Maybe Taylor or some other friends who draw, but mainly I'll be working on Mendoza. He does all the crazy adventures(like the time he talked to Lee[therapist]) and all the other starnge gambits he always ends up in. For now I'll just keep on keeping on. I have story pages I have to post and still a bunch more sketches(and if I ever get a deal to fucking publish I have a bunch of stuff I have held back because I don't want it stolen that can be shown). Everything is cool between Mendoza and I, he just works like 6 1/2 days a week or more so drawing is pretty tough.

Hopefully this(what I hope is a) sabatical will be of the sexual type. After all it's hard to draw when you're doing it(said in an unsavory voice).

For now, the readers will have to put up with a bunch more of my rambling, introspective, long rants that will never mean anything until I'm famous or dead. Wonderful.

This is a picture of my biggest crush this summer(which compared to last summer's draught is actually pretty amazing, I was doing something both right and absoletely wrong this summer) who I will never see again in anything other than what will surely be an awkward situation. Yeah, she was mentioned in a previous post. And yes, Lee is keeping her warm. And yes, I am creepy and alone.

If it gives me any points I didn't draw her until I never saw her again.

Shit, I just thought of a funny story. Once she sat with me and asked to see my drawings. I showed her a bunch(careful to flip quickly past my Batman fetish) and she liked them. Suddenly the flipping stops on a picture of someone that looks a bunch like her. I stutteringly explain that I'm bad at likenesses before I realize it totally looks like her and have to backtrack and explain of course I was just drawing someone who looked like her but not her(but if I am so bad you woulnd't be able to tell the difference anyway, arghh, headache).

And no this picture isn't the one she saw. This is an obscured pic of her(to keep her identity secret, "but Adrian I thought you were bad at likenesses?", you say, okay I did it like this so I don't have to try to make it look like her, jeez)

Looking back and looking ahead

First of all, I should apologize to Rivero because I asked him to go out tonight and draw at a cafe, and I didn't even draw (not uncommon). He completed a sketch, but I just wasn't contributing anything to the creative atmosphere in any way, so for this post I'm making an announcement for this blog and its growing number of viewers (just basing it on the counter in the sidebar). Before I say what I have to, I'll tell you a little bit about how Graphic Apparatus came about just because we've never done so.

Sometime in August of 2006, I asked Adrian what he thought about the idea of doing a team blog where we could push each other to draw on a more regular basis with some kind of regular posting schedule. I think I had started a sketch blog of my own but wasn't doing much with it. I also was enjoying some art blogs created by different groups of artists and seeing all the potential of online sketch journals where people were focusing on process and not necessarily just finished work. He agreed to it and we talked about what to name it, and he came up with the title we have now. Looking back to the end of August 2006, we just started posting without ever really explaining our intent or the purpose of creating a team blog. It was just an experiment anyway, and we never really specified how much or IF we would promote the site. Graphic Apparatus would just be a push for us to do more work, and I really wanted to focus on being more consistent--something I could never quite achieve with my college work because I was a shitty art student with no direction and declining motivation. Five years after school, I'm not that much different save for a brief time prior to this year's Comic-Con. So, here we are over a year after starting, and Adrian's been good about producing more work and getting input from others who check out drawing forums.

So why this long-winded explanation with no sketch or any images? Tonight, I said something to Adrian about setting aside my artistic endeavors to make some changes to my life, and I also said this was not some way of baiting him into saying something nice about my ability to draw. It wasn't some sneaky way of getting compliments from a fellow artist in order to feel good about myself. It was an honest thought on my part that I wanted to say out loud. He was nice enough to say I was good at what I do, so should just stick with it to keep improving. It was a nice thing to say, but I was still thinking about my overall lack of identity and body of work as an "illustrator" or "artist" or whatever I've tried to label myself as. In short, I was grumpy and fed up my lack of effort over the past year[s].

Where does all this leave Graphic Apparatus now? Well, I say that Adrian keeps posting all the stuff he cranks out on a daily basis. I step away from posting to do a lot of thinking about what it is I'm looking to achieve now that I'm 30. Is it comic book work or some other niche in illustration? Maybe Rivero will decide to focus on Art Dump (the other site he started but put on hold since we were focusing our efforts here) or he could start something new. I'll talk to him about it soon, but it's really up to him, and whatever it is, anyone who comes here to browse should keep checking on what he has to share. He has plenty of ideas on the drawing table, so you won't be disappointed. His next post here should let you know where he's going to be posting.

Even after writing this, I'm not sure it was even necessary, but it's rather therapeutic to get it off my chest. I could be back as soon as next week, but who knows.

Thanks to all those who continue to check out this blog! AND thanks to anyone who took the time to read all of the above.
